Before Using
In deciding to using a medication,
the chance of taking the drug must be weighed against the good it will
do. This is a decision you will make. For tacrine the following
must be considered
Allergic reaction
Tell your family doctor if you have any unusual or
allergy to tacrine or to wound antiseptics - Akrinol, Panflavin,
Monacrin. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to
any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.
Pregnancy care
Studies on effects in pregnancy have not been done
in either humans or pets.
Breast-feeding problem
It is not known whether tacrine passes into breast
milk. However, use of tacrine is not recommended in nursing mothers.
Use for Children
Studies on this drug have been done only in
adult diseaseds and there is no special info comparing use of tacrine
in child with use in other age groups.
Elderly care
Studies on tacrine have been done only in middle-aged
and older diseaseds. Information on the effects of tacrine is based on these
diseaseds.
Drug interactions
Although certain medication must not be using
together at all, in other cases two various medication may be using together
even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your family doctor may want to
change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking
tacrine, it is especially important that your health care professional know
if you are taking any of the following:

Cimetidine - Tagamet Cimetidine may cause higher blood
levels of tacrine, which may increase the risk of side effects

Inflammation or pain drug, except narcotics Stomach irritation
may be increased

Neuromuscular blocking agents - medication using in surgery to relax
muscles Tacrine may increase the side effects of medication; your family doctor
may change the dose of tacrine before you have surgery

Smoking tobacco Smoking may cause lower blood levels of tacrine,
which may decrease the effects of tacrine; if you smoke, your family doctor may need
to change the dose of tacrine

Theophylline - Theo-Dur, Uniphyl Tacrine may cause higher
blood levels of theophylline, which may increase the risk of side effects;
your family doctor may need to change the dose of theophylline
Other Information for using
The presence of other medical
problems may effect the use of tacrine. Make sure you tell your family doctor if
you have any other medical problems, especially:

Heart problems, including slow heartbeat or hypotension - low blood
pressure,

Intestinal blockage

Liver disease - or history of

Parkinson's disease

Stomach ulcer - or history of

Urinary tract blockage or difficult urination Tacrine may make
these conditions worse

Brain disease, other,

Epilepsy or history of seizures

Head injury with loss of consciousness Tacrine may cause seizures
