Before Using
In deciding to using a medication,
the chance of taking the drug must be weighed against the good it will
do. This is a decision you will make. For sulfonamides, the
following must be considered
Allergic reaction
Tell your family doctor if you have any unusual or
allergy to sulfa medication, furosemide - Lasix or thiazide
diuretics - water pills, oral antidiabetics - diabetes drug you take by
mouth, glaucoma drug you take by mouth - for example, acetazolamide "
Diamox ", dichlorphenamide " Daranide ", or methazolamide " Neptazane ".
Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances,
such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.
Pregnancy care
Studies have not been done in pregnant women. However,
studies in mice, rats and rabbits have shown that some sulfonamides cause
birth defects, including cleft palate and bone problems. Sulfonamides are
not recommended for use at the time of labor and delivery. These medication
may cause unwanted effects in the baby.
Breast-feeding problem
Sulfonamides pass into the breast milk. This drug
is not recommended for use during breast-feeding. It may cause liver problems,
anemia and other unwanted effects in nursing babies, especially those with
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase - G6PD deficiency.
Use for Children
Sulfonamides must not be given to infants under
2 months of age unless directed by the child's family doctor, because they may cause
unwanted effects.
Elderly care
Elderly people are especially sensitive to the effects
of sulfonamides. Severe skin problems and blood problems may be more likely
to occur in the elderly. These problems may also be more likely to occur in
diseaseds who are taking diuretics - water pills along with this drug.
Drug interactions
Although certain medication must not be using
together at all, in other cases two various medication may be using together
even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your family doctor may want to
change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking
sulfonamides, it is especially important that your health care professional
knows if you are taking any of the following:

Other Information for using
The presence of other medical
problems may effect the use of sulfonamides. Make sure you tell your family doctor
if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Anemia or other blood problems

Kidney disease
