Before Using

In deciding to using a medication, the chance of taking the drug must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you will make. For sulfapyridine, the following must be considered

Allergic reaction

Tell your family doctor if you have any unusual or allergy to sulfa medication, furosemide - Lasix or thiazide diuretics - water pills, oral antidiabetics - diabetes drug you take by mouth, glaucoma drug you take by mouth - acetazolamide " Diamox ", dichlorphenamide " Daranide ", methazolamide " Neptazane ", or pyrimethamine - Daraprim. Pregnancy care

Studies have not been done. Studies in rats and mice have shown that some sulfa medication, given by mouth in high doses, cause birth defects, including cleft palate and bone problems. In addition, sulfa medication may cause liver problems in newborn infants. Therefore, use is not recommended during pregnancy.

Breast-feeding problem

Sulfapyridine passes into the breast milk. This drug may cause liver problems in nursing babies. In addition, it may cause blood problems in nursing babies with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase - G6PD deficiency - lack of G6PD enzyme. Therefore, use is not recommended in nursing women.

Use for Children

Use of this drug is not recommended since dermatitis herpetiformis usually does not occur in child.

Elderly care

Many medication have not been studied specifically in elderly people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way they do in adults people or if they cause various side effects or problems in elderly people. There is no special info comparing the use of sulfapyridine in the elderly with use in other age groups.
