Before Using
In deciding whether to use
a drug, the problems of uses this drugs must be weighed against the good
it will do. This is a decision you will make. For vaginal
metronidazole, the following must be considered
Allergic reaction
Tell your family doctor if you have any unusual or
allergy to metronidazole. Also tell your health care professional
if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives,
or dyes.
Pregnancy care
Vaginal metronidazole has not been studied in pregnant
women. Metronidazole given by mouth - Flagyl has not been shown to cause
birth defects. Before taking this drug, make sure your family doctor knows if
you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant.
Breast-feeding problem
Use is not recommended in nursing mothers since
metronidazole passes into breast milk and may cause unwanted effects in the
baby. In addition, metronidazole may change the taste of your breast milk.
Your family doctor may want you to stop breast-feeding and use this drug for
a short time. During this time the breast milk must be pumped or drawn out
with a breast pump and thrown away. Two days after you finish using this drug,
you may go back to breast-feeding.
Use for Children
Studies on these medication have been done only in
adult diseaseds and there is no special info comparing use of vaginal
metronidazole in child with use in other age groups.
Elderly care
Many medication have not been studied specifically
in elderly people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly
the same way they do in adults people or if they cause various side effects
or problems in elderly people. There is no special info comparing use
of metronidazole in the elderly with use in other age groups.
Drug interactions
Although certain medication must not be using
together at all, in other cases two various medication may be using together
even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your family doctor may want to
change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are using
vaginal metronidazole it is especially important that your health care professional
know if you are taking any of the following:

Alcohol or alcohol-containing medication - NyQuil, Geritol Metronidazole
can cause serious side effects such as abdominal cramping, flushing, headache,
nausea, or vomiting when it is using with alcohol

Anticoagulants - blood thinners Taking metronidazole may increase
the effects of anticoagulants, changing the amount you need to take

Disulfiram - Antabuse Severe confusion or mental problems
can occur if metronidazole is using together with disulfiram or if it is using
up to 2 weeks after disulfiram treat has been stopped
Other Information for using
The presence of other medical
problems may effect the use of vaginal metronidazole. Make sure you tell your
family doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Central nervous system - CNS disease, including epilepsy Metronidazole
may increase the risk of seizures - convulsions or other side effects

Liver disease, severe Patients with severe liver disease may
have an increase in side effects

Low white blood cell count - or history of Metronidazole may
make the condition worse
