Before Having This Test
In deciding to use a diagnostic test, any chance of the test must be weighed
against the good it will do. This is a decision you will make.
Always test results may be effected by other things. For the test using bentiromide,
the following must be considered
Allergic reaction
Tell your family doctor if you have any unusual or
allergy to bentiromide. Also tell your family doctor if you are allergic
to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.
Diet Eating prunes or cranberries shortly before
the bentiromide test period starts will effect test results. Avoid these foods
for 3 days before the test.
Pregnancy care
Studies with bentiromide have not been done in pregnant
women. However, in animal studies bentiromide has not been shown to cause
birth defects or other problems.
Breast-feeding problem
It is not known whether bentiromide passes into
the breast milk. However, this drug has not been reported to cause problems
in nursing babies.
Use for Children
Studies on this drug have been done only in older
children and adult diseaseds and there is no special info comparing
use of bentiromide in child up to 6 years of age with use in other age
groups.
Elderly care
Many medication have not been studied specifically
in elderly people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly
the same way they do in adults people or if they cause various side effects
or problems in elderly people. There is no special info comparing use
of bentiromide in the elderly with use in other age groups.
Drug interactions
Although certain medication must not be using
together at all, in other cases two various medication may be using together
even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your family doctor may want to
change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking
bentiromide it is especially important that your family doctor know if you are taking
or using any of the following:

Acetaminophen - Tylenol

Chloramphenicol - Chloromycetin

Local anesthetics - benzocaine and lidocaine

Para-aminobenzoic acid - PABA-containing preparations - sunscreens
and some multivitamins

Procainamide - Pronestyl
-
Sulfonamides - sulfa medication
-
Thiazide diuretics - water pills Use of these medication during
the test period will effect the test results

Pancreatic supplements - pancrelipase Use of pancreatic
supplements may give false test results
Other Information for using
The presence of other medical
problems may effect the results of the test. Make sure you tell your family doctor
if you have any other medical problems, especially:

Disease of the stomach and intestines

Kidney disease
-
Liver disease - severe These medical problems may cause false
test results
Preparation for This Test
Your family doctor may ask you to avoid certain medication or foods for at least
72 hours before this test is done
Follow your family doctor's
instructions carefully
. Otherwise, this test may not work and may have
to be done again.
Unless otherwise directed by your family doctor:

Do not eat anything after midnight the night before the test. Some
foods may effect the results of the test.

Urinate before taking bentiromide. You must have an empty bladder
when you take the test.

After taking bentiromide, drink a large glass of water - at least
8 ounces. Drink another large glass of water in 2 hours and then 2 more glasses
of water in the next 4 hours. This will help increase the amount of urine,
which is needed for testing.
