Barbiturates - bar-BI-tyoo-ratesbelong to the group of medication called central nervous system - CNS depressants - medication that cause drowsiness. They act on the brain and CNS to produce effects that may be helpful or harmful. This depends on the individual patient's condition and response and the amount of drug taken.
Some of the barbiturates may be using before surgery to relieve anxiety or tension. The barbiturates have also been using to relieve nervousness or restlessness during the daytime. However, the barbiturates have generally been replaced by safer medication for the treat of insomnia and daytime nervousness or tension.
If too much of a barbiturate is using, it may become habit-forming.
